Cultural heritage originates from the surroundings of our rivers

The association "PIKAČ" enabled 1st grade students to participate in the activities of building a fence in the old fashioned way in the center of Čakovec in a fun, purposeful and educational way, getting to know the environment and cultural heritage of their region. The students learned to weave a fence with the help of sticks, but they were also an opportunity for the younger generations to get to know the ancient way of working with natural materials, as well as for the older generations, who were brought back to their childhood for a moment. In this way, they were enabled to develop or improve their fine motor skills, which contribute to better memory, greater attention, hand-eye coordination, and the development of creativity... Likewise, the students had direct contact with sticks, they could feel its texture and smell, and they got to know its purpose. The participants of the association enabled the students to include almost all of their senses in the activity, and this acquires a new meaning for them, which they can connect with their previous experience and be the basis for new experiential learning.
Returning to the classrooms, the students knitted small fences that decorate their classroom and which they will proudly show to their schoolmates, passing on the knowledge they have acquired.
