Discover an Insect!
There
are thousands of species of insects in our world, and each are adapted to
survive in their habitat. Pests provide a fascinating entry point into many
curricular subjects, including biology, ecology, environment and health. In the
first workshop, Polish students learned what an insect is and what some of
their adaptations are, learned insect anatomy, the scientific inquiry process
and much more. The STEAM-centric lesson plans emphasize both content and
process skills and support standards from the National Science Teachers
Association.
Objectives
Students will:
1. recognize what makes
an insect an insect by identifying the common structures and characteristics of
insects.
2. explore examples of
insect adaptations and infer how they fit the insect’s habitat or lifestyle.
3. appreciate the
diversity of insects.
Activity Introduction
1. What is an insect?
2. Insect Anatomy
3. Adaptation
4. Additional activities
To make the activity more challenging students put their knowledge into play by
creating mental maps and posters connected with the Insects topic.
